Smith and Bybee Lakes

stark definition of the trees' form as if drawn in dark ink
followed by a watercolor of gold and yellow,
the tall grasses cropped short by winter, white golden this overcast afternoon

great blue herons wading in shallow water,
waiting on the tree branch,
as still as a picture
slipping into its reflection on the surface of the water

clots of leaves left in the elbows/branch junctions of trees
are on first inspection
some promising speck of indeterminable species
on second inspection
the decaying remains of an unlucky aves
and lastly the aforementioned remainder
of the fall's harvest
